Iran University of Science & Technology (IUST), M.Sc., 2010-2012 Title: “Fault detection of rail surface using axle-box acceleration” Supervisors: Prof. Habibollah Molatefi and Prof. Asghar Nasr
About project: Evaluating rail surface defects is usually done by visual inspection which has two major disadvantages: human error and in most of the times, the defects can only be identified in severe levels which leads to costly maintenance operations. Axle-box acceleration (ABA) technic has recently found wide application in rail industry especially condition monitoring of railway tracks. Despite its vast applications and advantages, there are still limits using this method. One of the most important ones is constant speed. This thesis deals with this problem with the help of vertical and lateral accelerations and Hilbert-Huang transform. Tehran Metro is chosen as a case study in which both axle load and velocity varies with time.
